Ascension Aspires to National Leadership in Oncology
Since coming together as One Ascension and formalizing the oncology clinical service line, we’ve been able to quickly assess Ascension’s many cancer centers and identify best practices to help our many devoted oncology providers to integrate uniform approaches. These include multidisciplinary care teams, a cornerstone of our mission to provide compassionate, personalized care throughout the continuum.

More than 70 of Ascension’s 80 cancer centers are certified by the Commission on Cancer (COC). Often this accreditation process takes several years, but all our health ministries are committed to completing it, even as its benchmarks for achieving and maintaining accreditation change with newly developed protocols and therapies.

Ascension’s goal is to become a national leader in oncology, which means building those new protocols and therapies into our standard practices. Our approach to uniformly spreading best practices is designed to help us stay focused on our Quadruple Aim:

“Delivering exceptional health outcomes, an exceptional experience for people we serve, and an exceptional experience for providers, at an affordable cost.”

In The Oncology Connection, you’ll read about the success achieved through provider-driven changes in Wisconsin. Our Wisconsin health ministry sites are leveraging relationships throughout Ascension to serve our patients nationally, with a uniformly high level of oncological care.

Provider-led improvements in cancer care delivery include:

  • adding resources, such as nurse navigators, to oncological interdisciplinary teams
  • piloting telemedicine in genetic testing and counseling so both patients and providers in rural and urban areas can access this resource
  • embracing an interdisciplinary team approach, including weekly tumor boards
  • standardizing tracking data from tumor conferences
  • engaging in national cancer registries and clinical trials

Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer for Ascension Healthcare, Dr. Ziad Haydar, outlines Ascension’s vision for oncological care in this way:

“We look to our content specialists and experts in oncological care and precision medicine. It is up to our experts to help define the System’s future strategy and tactics, incorporating uniform best practices for us to provide all our Ascension patients with state-of-the-art precision medicine in cancer care.”

The ability to offer all our cancer patients access to state-of-the-art cancer diagnosis and compassionate care is inspired by Ascension’s Mission. As you’ll see in these stories, successful collaboration among health ministries is happening because of our organization’s unwavering commitment to care excellence.
